Windows Live Search Tricks
When it comes to web search, Windows Live stands a distant third behind Google and Yahoo!.
There are however are some lesser-known features in Live Search that aren’t just useful, you won’t find them in any of the other popular search engines. Let’s take a look:
1. Watch Video Preview in Search Results
When you hover the mouse over any of the thumbnail images appearing in Live Video Search, it will automatically play a short preview of the video so you have a good idea about the clip without visiting the target website where that video is hosted.
As you may have noticed in the screencast above, this video preview feature is available for all clip indexed by Live Search whether they are on YouTube, MySpace, CNN or ABC News.
2. Find Web Pages That Link to Documents, MP3s, Videos, ZIPs ..
The contains: operator is Live Search lets you find web pages that link to other online documents and multimedia files like music and video. This is very different from Google’s filetype: search operator (also available in Live Search) which looks for content inside PDF and Office documents.
For example, if you are looking to download a Microsoft Word report from Gartner site that is about elearning, just type: "elearning site:gartner.com contains:doc"
Similarly, if you like to find all pages on Wikipedia that link to MP3 files, type "site:wikipedia.org contains:mp3"
Another example - to learn about software that you can download from the Google website, use "site:google.com contains:zip OR contains:exe"
3. Save Images & Pictures As Your Search the Web
Live Image Search includes something called a scratch pad that lets you save collection of images with a simple drag-n-drop. This comes very handy if you are searching for images using different keywords and need to shortlist only a few from that large collection.
4. Get Live Search Results as RSS Feeds
While there are external services that let you subscribe to search results via RSS feeds, neither Yahoo! nor Google provide RSS feeds of their search results.
You can however subscribe to search pages from Windows Live as RSS feed via this undocumented hack. Open Live Search, type your query and then on the results page, appened "&format=rss" to the URL. See example:
Search Page: http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=iphone
RSS Feed: http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=iphone&format=rss
This parameter converts the Live Search page into an RSS feed that you can add to your news reader. Thanks Abhishek.
5. Limit Your Search to Website that offer RSS Feeds
Another interesting search operator in Live Search is "hasfeed" - it lets you find only those web pages that link to RSS feeds. For instance, you could say "micheal phelps hasfeed:" to find web pages that are about "michael phelps" and also syndicate content as RSS feeds.
You can group hasfeed: with other search operators so if want to know about all pages related to movies on ABC website that have feeds, just type "movies site:abc.com hasfeed:"
6. Specify Weight (Preference) in the Search Query
Say you are planning for an upcoming vacation and need some advice related to holiday destinations. Now rather than searching for "holiday destinations" that will return very broad results, you could add the prefer: operator and specify places that you’re really keen to visit though you don’t mind other suggestions.
For e.g., says "holiday destinations prefer:japan"

Coming soon Google Analytics-AdSense Clicks Tracking
If you are using Google AdSense on your website, here’s some very good news.
You will soon be able to track visitor clicks on your AdSense ads using Google Analytics reports.
These new reports in Analytics have enough details to help you exactly measure AdSense performance on every single page of your website.
Google dropped hints on AdSense - Analytics integration some two years but the program has finally entered the beta phase as revealed by a post on GoogleCache (offline now).
Luckily the story remained in FeedDemon’s cache and picking from there, following is a summary of AdSense related data that you’ll be able to track via Google Analytics:
1. The number of times AdSense ads were clicked on any given web page.
2. AdSense revenue generated per page for clicks mentioned in #1.
3. You’ll also know the CTR and CPM for all web pages - no need to create individual URL channels in your AdSense dashboard.
4. "Top AdSense Referrers" - this is the most interesting report as it helps you know about revenue made per referring websites.
Let’s take an example. Assume two sites - digg.com and cnn.com - have linked to a page on your website and are sending some referral traffic. Now Analytics will tell you exactly how much AdSense revenue you are making through traffic from each of these sites.
This report has enormous potential as it lends a "measurable" value to each incoming link. Some sites could even use this as a replacement for affiliate programs.
All the above information is based on screenshots that were shared by Google Cache but that story is no longer available on the web.

APPLE IPHONE
![]()
Just checked official mail from Vodafone confirming launch date and price of Apple iPhone in India. Vodafone is launching iPhone in India from August 22, 2008 with 8GB & 16GB models, priced at Rs. 31,000 and Rs. 36,100 respectively.
Vodafones rival, Airtel is also launching iPhone on 22 August probably at the same price.
This is much higher than what I have expected. Also as these prices are clearly targeting very rich consumer section, these iPhones may come altogether with different plan with higher call rates / GPRS charges.
But I am still hopeful that prices will drop significantly once telecom companies make enough profits from first wave of iPhone customers. So I will surely wait for atleast 2 months before buying iPhone.

Microsoft Office Activation Assistant
On most OEM computers running Microsoft Windows operating system, regardless of it’s a desktop, notebook or laptop PC, now comes with pre-loaded trial version of Microsoft Office 2007, primarily Home and Student Edition, which is a time-limited product for evaluation if use without proper activation.
However, Office 2K7 is not the only product that is installed, there is another program calls Microsoft Office Activation Assistant that co-exists in the program list, with the purpose to guide user through to activate (of course, after paying) the Office suite product. It’s not required by any mean, and can be easily uninstalled and removed by using Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel (Programs and Features in Windows Vista). The trick is, Microsoft Office Activation Assistant has to be uninstalled before Microsoft Office 2007 Trial is uninstalled or removed.
If you have uninstalled MS Office 2007, and now try to uninstall the Activation Assistant program, the following error message may appear, and stop user from uninstall and removing the Microsoft Office Activation Assistant, despite there is no more Office program available.
Microsoft Office must be installed before you can uninstall this program.
To fix the unable and cannot uninstall the Office Activation Assistant issue, the solution is pretty easy. Just download a trial version of the Microsoft Office 2007 software from Microsoft, and install it on the PC. Then proceed to uninstall and remove Activation Assistant properly, before continuing to uninstall and get rid of the Office trial again.

Intel Remote Wake Technology Wakes PC System from Sleep Mode to Handle VOIP Calls
In normal working environment, PC system will be remained power on almost all the time for office application and normal task processing. However, there are certain scenarios whereby the PC usage is only required to work during specific event, probably less than ten or twenty percent of the total time. By looking at this opportunity, Intel has just announced a new series of platform that will enable PC system to wake from sleep mode for specific tasks processing such as handling VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls.
Named as DG45FC and DG45ID, the platforms are enhanced with remote wake technology that can wake the whole system up from a power saving sleep mode to continue handling important tasks. Just imagine, now the machine can detect phone call over the Internet and wake up from standby mode to serve the call without any miss. Of course you can choose to let the system permanently on but it will only waste the unnecessary power consumption for nothing. According to Intel spokesperson, it will be able to save a significant power of more than 20 percent as compared to normal operating PC. Besides, there is another usage model that user can purposely wakes the system up remotely via phone call, in case there is a need to do some software patches or document retrievals.
Although this technology is currently only working on Ethernet connection, but it shouldn’t be a major issue since most of the PC systems in the market are designed with it. Even before Intel plans to release the first shipment by next month, there are already some engagement going on with major OEMs such as HP and Dell to incorporate this feature into future PC products. No doubt, this is another good effort being initiated by giant PC maker towards green environment.

Clean that FeedBurner Subscriber Count Badge on your Site
The good folks at FeedBurner have pushed some changes recently that has affected the design of the feed count badges. See some example below:
The lower half of the badge where it says "By FeedBurner" is no longer rendered as a transparent graphic and hence you see that ugly bar at the bottom.
If you are displaying this FeedBurner badge on your site, read this workaround to hide that lower portion of the graphic.
Open your blog template and enclose the badge image inside the following div code.
<div style="overflow:hidden; width:88px; height:19px"></div>

“We evaluated a number of potential fingerprint solutions for this project, and found that Atrua delivered the superior combination of features and performance for mobile phones,” said Paul Wu, General Manager of Lenovo Mobile’s Product Department. “Because of the Atrua sensor’s small size, we were able to fit it conveniently on the edge of the P960.”
According to the press release, “With fingerprint recognition now common in laptop PCs, the capability has been increasingly finding its way into mobile phones. Atrua’s fingerprint touch controls deliver all the benefits of fingerprint sensors found in laptops, and more. Studies have shown that mobile phones are frequently lost or stolen and many users are concerned about compromising the private and valuable data on their phones. Since typing passwords is even more cumbersome on phones than it is on PCs, the convenience of never having to re-type passwords is all-the-more appealing to phone users. In addition, Lenovo’s P960 has an innovative ‘VIP recording’ feature that automatically records calls from designated numbers. The fingerprint biometric technology is used in the P960 to protect sensitive data such as VIP recordings, text messages, call history, and address book information.”
“We are pleased to see a recognized leader in fingerprint for laptops adopt our technology for their mobile phone and we are delighted to have the opportunity to support such a leading global manufacturer in their ongoing effort to bring greater levels of security and convenience to users of mobile devices,” said Anthony Gioeli, CEO of Atrua Technologies.

Make Your Desktop Icons Smaller or Larger with the Mouse Wheel
When you right-click on the Windows desktop, there’s an option to change the default size of desktop icons - you could either choose medium, large or the default "Classic" size.![]()
Now if you are looking for something extra and don’t want to limit yourself to these three default sizes, try this trick:
Left-click anywhere on the desktop, hold the ‘Control’ key and move the scroll wheel on the mouse - the desktop icons will grow smaller or larger depending upon the direction of your scroll.
Uncheck the "Auto Arrange" option for some more interesting results. Now I use this on a Windows Vista desktop but the trick should probably work on XP systems as well (sorry, its a Vista specific feature).
